Sony’s strategy of releasing two flagship Android phones per year is set to continue with the announcement of the Xperia Z3 at IFA in a couple of weeks. Just as we’ve seen with the leaked Galaxy Note 4, there won’t be many surprises on the day as a Chinese site has spilled the beans on the full specs of the Z3.
According to the information the Z3 will be only a relatively minor update to the Z2 that was released to come acclaim back in February. It’s still packing the previous generation Snapdragon 801 processor clocked slightly faster at 2.5GHz, 3GB of RAM, a 5.2 inch 1080p display and 20.7 megapixel camera.
Naturally there ought to be performance improvements in all of these areas. The camera in particular was deemed by many to underperform when compared to both its raw spec—it uses an oversampling technique similar to that pioneered by Nokia in phones like the Lumia 1020, which combines multiple pixels to produce smaller but noise-free images—and Sony’s potential as seen by its imaging department.
What will be new is the design. The Xperia Z3 looks set to usher in a refined to Sony’s design language. While it is the same height as the Z2, the phone will be marginally narrower and around 0.7mm thinner.
Earlier leaks have also shown the phone to have rounded edges, replacing the somewhat harsh corners that have been a trademark feature of Xperia models up until now.
On paper this sounds like an ergonomic improvement, since those corners tended to make the phones feel larger than they were—and it’s already among the larger flagships. Presumably the device will still be dust and waterproof, following Sony’s announcement last year that all of its future devices would be.
The Sony Xperia Z3 is expected to be announced on 3rd September, along with a possible smartwatch and an update to its series of lens-camera like the QX100.
